New Research: What People Really Experience During Float Therapy

Float therapy creates a quiet space where the body can rest deeply and the mind can slow down.

A new scientific study published in BMC Complementary Medicine and Therapies in 2026 gives a deeper look into what people actually experience during Floatation-REST, also known as float therapy.

Floatation-REST means lying in warm water with Epsom salt, in a quiet and dark environment. The water supports the body, and the reduced light, sound and pressure help the body and mind slow down.

The researchers wanted to understand the inner experience of floating. Not only if people felt relaxed, but how the experience changed during the session.

The study included 14 healthy adults. Each person completed float sessions and was then interviewed in detail about what they felt, noticed and experienced during floating.

Floating Often Moves Through Four Stages

The researchers found that many people went through four main stages during a float session.

In the beginning, people were aware of their body, their position in the water and their thoughts. Some felt calm quite quickly, while others first noticed restlessness, thoughts or a feeling that they “should” relax.

Then the experience started to change.

Many people described a transition where they began to lose the normal feeling of time and space. They could no longer clearly feel where they were in the tank. Some felt as if gravity was reduced, or as if they were floating in a different way. The normal feeling of “up”, “down”, “body” and “room” became softer.

At the same time, the body started to feel different. Several people described that the border between the body and the water became less clear. The body could feel soft, warm, light or almost not present. One participant described the body as “blurred with the water.”

This was followed by a deeper stage. The researchers call this an altered state of consciousness. In simple words, this means a state that feels different from normal waking life.

A Deep State of Calm

During the deeper stage, many participants described a strong feeling of relaxation. The body became very calm. Muscles softened. Tension was reduced. Some people felt warmth in the whole body.

One participant described the feeling as having no pain or tension, with the muscles feeling soft and the body feeling warm and open.

This is important because it shows that floating is not only a mental experience. It is also very physical. The body seems to enter a deep resting state.

Many people also reported that their thoughts slowed down. Some had fewer thoughts. Some had moments with almost no mental content at all. For many, this created a feeling of mental quietness.

This can be one of the most valuable parts of float therapy today. Many people live with too much noise, too much stress and too many thoughts. Floating offers a rare place where the mind can become still.

Feelings of Safety, Happiness and Connection

“No fear… freedom and connection… I still feel recharged.”

Participant quote from the 2026 Floatation-REST study.

One of the most positive findings in the study was the emotional experience.

The researchers found that positive feelings were common during the deeper floating state. Participants reported feelings such as:

  • calm
  • safety
  • security
  • happiness
  • freedom from fear
  • connection
  • contentment
  • being held or surrounded

Some people felt emotionally neutral, but many described the experience in a positive way. The feeling of security was especially common. Several people also described a feeling of being safely surrounded or supported.

One participant described a moment with no fear, together with a feeling of freedom, connection and strength. After the session, the person still felt “recharged.”

This is a powerful result. It suggests that float therapy can create an environment where people feel safe enough to let go. For stress recovery, this feeling of safety may be very important.

The Body Can Feel Less Heavy

Many people in the study experienced a clear change in body awareness.

Some felt that they could no longer feel parts of the body in the usual way. Others felt that the body became softer, lighter or less defined. The boundary between the body and the water sometimes became blurred.

For many people, this was pleasant. Instead of carrying the body as something tense or heavy, the body could feel supported and quiet.

This is one reason why float therapy can feel so different from normal rest. In a bed, chair or massage table, the body still feels pressure from the surface. In a float tank, the salt water supports the body evenly. This may help the body relax more deeply.

Time and Space Can Feel Different

Another important result was that many participants lost the normal sense of time and space.

Some were not sure how much time had passed. Others felt less aware of their exact position in the tank. The feeling of space became softer or less important.

This can be a very special part of floating. In daily life, we are always controlled by time: meetings, phones, messages, schedules and stress. In the float tank, time can feel less dominant.

Silence and darkness help reduce outside stimulation.

For many people, this may create a feeling of freedom.

Coming Back: Calm, Present and Recharged

At the end of the session, people returned to normal awareness. This could happen naturally or when the light or sound signaled the end of the float.

Participants became aware of the body again. They noticed the tank, the room and their thoughts returning. But many also described feeling more present, more awake in themselves and more energized.

Some described the feeling as coming back to the body. Others felt physically vital or recharged.

This final stage is important for spas, hotels and wellness centers. The guest does not only leave relaxed. They may leave with a deeper sense of presence and recovery.

Why This Study Matters

This study helps explain why float therapy can feel so powerful.

It shows that floating is not just “lying in warm water.” The experience can move from normal awareness into a deep state of rest, where the body relaxes, thoughts slow down, time feels different and positive feelings can grow.

The study also connects well with earlier research showing that Floatation-REST may support stress reduction, anxiety reduction, pain relief and better well-being.

For hotels, spas and wellness centers, this is important.

A professional float tank can become a signature wellness experience.

Guests today are not only looking for luxury. Many are looking for real recovery. They want to sleep better, feel calmer, reduce stress and reset the nervous system.

Float therapy offers a quiet, safe and deeply relaxing experience that is very different from many other wellness treatments.

Simple Message for Customers

Float therapy gives the body a place to rest deeply.

The warm salt water supports the body.
The darkness and silence reduce outside stress.
The mind slows down.
The body softens.
Time becomes less important.
Many people feel calm, safe and recharged.

This new research shows that floating can be more than relaxation. It can be a deep reset for body and mind.
